What Is “Leaky Gut Syndrome”

Leaky gut is a term used to describe the integrity of the intestines. Normally tiny holes in the intestines allow for nutrients to pass into the blood stream to be utilized by the cells. Leaky Gut Syndrome occurs when the integrity of the intestinal wall starts to break down. When this happens, the tiny holes become larger, preventing normal nutrient absorption and releasing undesirable proteins into the blood stream.

The origin of Leaky Gut Syndrome is intestinal inflammation. Some of the causes are consuming refined foods often, antibiotic use, infrequent elimination, daily stress, and/or intestinal infections. Further problems will develop such as digestive issues, food allergies and/or sensitivities, and an increased risk for infections.

Next week we’ll look at symptoms and what to do.
