Healthy Holiday Tip

Holidays are the perfect time to gather with family, celebrate the meaning of the season and share enjoyable food.  Here are a few simple ideas for fully enjoying all of your holiday meals while staying healthy.

If you choose to drink alcohol, it is easiest on the liver if consumed with a meal or appetizer and not by itself.  Drinking alcohol after a few bites of food slows the absorption of this concentrated sugar.

Vegetables attain their color by the vitamins and minerals they contain most.  Vegetables are more densely packed with nutrients, than any other food.  As you prepare your plate, choose as many vegetables as possible with the most color variety that you can.  This will help fill you up on the most nourishing foods, with the highest quantity of many minerals and vitamins.  Desserts and refined products have very little nutritional value and use up minerals and vitamins to digest them, so we want to “stock up” on our nutrition.

Desserts can be so tasty and hard to resist, so the best option is to take a smaller portion of each of the ones you enjoy most.  As you consume them, focus your attention on the taste and texture, savor the various flavors, chew them slowly for prolonged enjoyment and appreciate their sweetness.  Enjoy the holidays!
