Skin Brushing

In the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed that my skin is feeling kind of dry, most likely due to the colder weather. It’s time to resurrect an old practice…skin brushing.

Skin brushing is a practice that can be done every morning for several minutes before showering. The skin is considered the largest organ in the body and one of the main 5 detoxifying organs. Skin brushing not only opens the pores to improve detoxification, it also helps move lymph (which I’ll discuss in 2 weeks), increases circulation, and removes dead skin cells to help decrease itching. During the winter, my favorite benefit is that brushing the skin daily will bring natural oils to the surface so the skin is softer and more moist. You can easily purchase a natural bristle brush from most health food stores or online. Look for beige-colored bristles, that are very soft to the touch, with a label that specifies “natural”.

Next week, I’ll write about how to skin brush properly for the most benefits.
