What is GMO?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms; you’ll also see foods described at genetically modified or “GM”. These are manufactured by Monsanto company. It is a process that involves using a carrier protein, such as a bacteria, to deliver new genetic material into a food. This bacteria acts as a toxin that is used as an insecticide. This genetic alteration is to strengthen the crops resistance against pests and pesticides, the problem is this bacteria/toxin/pesticide is now part of the food we are consuming.

The greatest concern with Genetically modified foods is that the altered DNA structure is no longer considered natural to the human body, and instead is likely recognized as foreign. Because we have no long-term studies to predict an outcome, we are faced with unknown consequences of GMO’s in our environment. The reason for such controversy is because altering the DNA of something can have potentially devastating effects. Some people believe that the increased consumption in GM foods is causing a rise in allergies and sensitivities.

One movement that many are striving for is to have GM foods be labeled. There is quite a bit of resistance, however next week I have several steps you can take to protect you and your family from GMO exposure.
