Fats,Oils and Inflammation

Fats and Oils have been a big topic of discussion with many people over this past week. So for the next year I’m going to give a tip about fats and oils on the first Wednesday of every month.

There are many types of oils, but today I’m going to focus on two types of polyunsaturated oils, omega 3’s and omega 6’s. Omega 3 oils namely, fish and flax, are considered very beneficial because of their anti-inflammatory effect. Omega 6’s, which are found in most nuts and oils, can also be very beneficial because they provide fat and protein to help balance blood sugar, however they are pro-inflammatory. This means they contribute to inflammation, such as swelling, congestion and pain.

Historically, humans consumed around a 1:1 ratio of omega 6 : omega 3 oils; today we are consuming closer to 20x the amount of omega 6 to omega 3!! If you are someone who is struggling with your weight, or struggling with inflammation and pain, I strongly suggest consuming mostly fish oil, flax oil and olive oil with meals. At the same time, cut back, or eliminate omega 6 oils such as vegetable, soybean, corn, peanut oils and all nuts for 60 days and see if this helps.
